Matthew 2:1–12

As we look toward this Sunday’s message from Matthew 2:1–12, it’s worth pausing to consider the situation the wise men found themselves in. These travelers from the East set out on a difficult journey because they were searching for Someone—the Messiah, the King of kings. They had seen His star and were eager to bring Him gifts worthy of a King.

But how did they know about the star? Scripture doesn’t tell us directly, but it is entirely possible that they were influenced by the writings and prophecies of Daniel, who had served in the courts of Babylon centuries earlier. Daniel spoke clearly of a coming King whose kingdom would never end. Perhaps his teachings lingered in that region long after he was gone, stirring the hearts of men who were willing to seek the truth.

Their journey was long. It required sacrifice, time, resources, and determination. Yet when they arrived in Jerusalem—the city that should have been the most expectant—what did they find?

• A frightened and hostile King Herod, who knew nothing of this Child but saw Him as a threat.

• Religious leaders who could quote the prophecy—they knew Messiah would be born in Bethlehem—yet showed no interest in going to see Him for themselves.

The wise men were seeking Jesus, but the rest of the world was indifferent.

Today, things have not changed much. Many people know the name of Jesus, but their hearts are unmoved. Some are indifferent; others are openly hostile. Scripture tells us, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Jesus Himself described the foolish person as one who builds his house on the sand—unstable, unprepared, and destined to collapse when the storms of life come (Matthew 7:26–27).

But the wise person?

The wise person seeks after God.

The wise person follows the light God gives.

The wise person builds his life on the Rock—Christ Himself.

The wise men in Matthew 2 sought Jesus with their whole hearts, and they found Him. The same promise holds true today: “Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

So the question is simple: Are you wise?

Are you seeking Him?

Are you building your life on Christ—your firm and unshakable foundation?

Wise men still seek Him. May we be counted among them.
