Worship in Mourning

As many of you know, on August 20, 2023, my daughter Katherine (Katie) Connor died by suicide. In the months since her passing, the book of Job has become especially meaningful to me. This Saturday evening, I will begin a sermon series walking through this powerful book of Scripture. Below are a few devotional thoughts drawn from the first message.

Worship in Mourning

Job was a man who feared God and walked uprightly. God blessed him greatly—yet in a single day Job lost everything, including his children. In his grief, Job did not pretend the pain was small. He mourned. But then he did something remarkable—he worshiped.

“The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” Job 1:21

True worship is not proven when life is easy. It is revealed when life is hard. How do we respond when plans fall apart, when inconvenience turns to frustration, or when tragedy strikes without warning? Do we question God’s sovereignty—or do we trust His heart?

Job did not sin, nor did he accuse God of wrongdoing. Even in mourning, he worshiped.

May we learn to praise God not only for His blessings, but for His faithfulness—no matter the season.
